Many of us protest to cleaning out our closets of the clothes we haven’t worn in years. The standard reasoning: you never know when it’ll come back in fashion. And it’s true. The best fashion trends always find their way back on to the runways, into our hearts and brought out from the back of our wardrobes, after years of exile.
The last couple of years has seen major reappearances of decades-old trends back in full force. Here are some of the best looks going strong in 2018 that are merely a remix of fashions from days gone by.
Women around the world collectively breathed a sigh of relief as the skinny jean trend finally petered out after more than a decade of painted-on pants. The new ill-fitted, boxy denims are a dream come true for the 99% of us who don’t look like Gisele Bundchen. But high-waisted, relaxed fit ‘mom jeans’ were a huge hit in the 80s and 90s as well, when baggy bottoms were all the rage. Just watch the early seasons of Friends and you’ll see Monica Geller and Rachel Green wearing mom jeans a lot. Back then they were known as ‘jeans’, before the skinnies took over and branded them old-fashioned and akin to something your mom would wear.
Hoops are in, and how! It seems the bigger the better with the likes of trendsetting Kendall Jenner and the Kardashians going for huge, bold silhouettes. Gold is the go-to, with embellishments such as rhinestones and pom poms also in favour. But those old enough to remember MTV in the 80s will recall the huge hoop presence in pop music videos. From Kylie Minogue to Whitney Houston, hoops were the earring to wear. Today, millions of women across the globe are happily dusting off their decades-old earrings to keep up with the current trend.
Crop Tops & High Waisted Bottoms
The late 90s and early 2000s, crop tops weren’t easy on women past their metabolic prime. Young uns like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani flaunted chiseled abs in teeny tiny tees and low-waisted bottoms. Luckily, the crop top trend of today mirrors the much more sensible and attainable fashions of the 1940s. Paired with high-waisted pants, shorts or skirts, a flattering peek of upper torso is merely optional. This style is ultra feminine and perfect to accentuate curves.
Oversized Denim Jackets
The last few years have seen a major 80s revival and the oversized denim jacket is testament to this. A trend in womens and mens fashion, the oversized jacket adds some instant, laidback cool to any outfit. Wear it with long or short dresses, shirts or tees and pants or go double denim and pair it with fitted jeans.
From Converse All-Stars to Adidas Superstars, white sneakers have persisted through the decades, never completely disappearing from the trend charts. Converse first made its All-Stars range in 1917 – that’s more than a 100 years of sneakers that are still going strong and on trend today. Whether the 80s’ Reebok Freestyle High Tops, 90s’ Keds or 2000s’ platform sneakers, white sneakers have earned their keep as a style staple that transcends time. Current favs mix sport with style with sweet whites from Vans, Adidas, Nike, Puma, and more.
While some trends are just fads that leave you wondering how on earth you ever wore it (heeled sneakers, anyone?), others just keep coming back into fashion. So before you chuck those bell bottoms and neon tops, think about the regret you may have when they’re all the rage a few years down the line.

Being a fashion enthusiast, I just love discovering new brands and designers, and keeping up with the latest trends.
